Beyond Fashion 2023

Motion Graphics

What is

LogoBeyondFashion-?

Each year, RIT's Vignelli Center for Design Studies hosts Beyond Fashion- an annual on-campus fashion show inspired by prolific designers Massimo and Lella Vignelli. RIT's New Media Design program had the privelage to create the motion graphics for the event to liven up the show for each designer's runway showcase. I was assigned to create motion graphics for designer Kelly Gampietro of "Fishy Patchwork" with three of my classmates.

Opportunity:

Create motion graphics for Fishy Patchwork's runway showcase.

Strategy:

Create motion graphics for each of the 9 outfits being showcased & live-trigger the animations as each outfit entered the runway.

Conceptualization

Be additive, not overwhelming.

Our challenge was to create motion graphics with an emphasis on not taking away attention from the runway. It was important to us that our animations aided the designs coming down the runway, not distractions that takes eyesight off of the fashion pieces. To do this, we created assets based on elements from each of the nine fashion pieces in Fishy Patchwork's set.

My Contributions

Motion Grid Patterns

I lead design on the motion graphics on three of the nine total pieces. To fit the fashion show's mantra "the grid is everything," we put varying assets into a grid to keep consistency with each pattern. Each team member assisted one another on each design to have a strong composition for display.

Intro + Idle Animation

Will Kettell and I collaborated on the intro animation which led into the idle animation that would play on the small LED screen for the duration of Fishy Patchwork's runway show.

The video swoops left offscreen which, during the show, transitions it from the big right screen to the small left screen.

Conclusion

The event was a great success, and the client was extremely pleased with our designs, highlighting how well they enhanced her fashion collection. Our choice to use a minimalist animation style helped keep the audience’s attention on the garments while subtly supporting each look on the runway. Every team member worked hard to ensure seamless, real-time transitions of the animations during the show. Overall, we were proud and excited about the outcome of Beyond Fashion 2023!
